This picture comes from the book For Starters by Sir Peter Parker, and shows Nathaniel and his brothers Alan and Oliver.

Nathaniel Parker was born on May 18th 1962 in London as the youngest child of Sir Peter Parker, a former British Railway Chairman, and Jill Rowe-Dutton Parker. He is the youngest of 4 children with sister Lucy, managing director, and brothers Alan, founder and major shareholder of the  Brunswick Group, and Oliver, director. He is married to actress/interior designer Anna Patrick and they have 2 daughters: Angelica (born 1996) and Raphaella (born 1998).

Nat was 9 years old when he decided to become an actor after seeing his sister Lucy in a play. The family always put on plays and in his early school years Nathaniel did a lot of acting. He was encouraged by his drama teacher and auditioned for the National Youth Theatre when he was 17. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He found both work and an agent while he was still at school, which was rarely seen. He bluffed himself into the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he had parts in several plays such as The Kiss, A Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream

The best thing that came from the RSC was his meeting with Anna. They met very briefly at a cafe and a year later they were both in a play called The Storm, in which they played lovers.

In 1988 he left the RSC to play in a film called War Requiem. He also played on stage with Dustin Hoffman in the Merchant of Venice. In 1989 he had his first TV role in Never Come Back. In 1992 he had a small part in the blockbuster The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. In 1993 he played his first major lead in Wide Sargasso Sea.

When he was offered the part of Rawdon Crawley he wasn't certain about the part. Anna, by then his wife, told him that this was the part for him. Rawdon is a man who starts as a rake, makes money from gambling, falls in love, marries and becomes obsessed with their baby. He described the man to her and she asked him, "What is your problem, Nat?" He took the part and it was his big breakthrough. People started to recognize him in the street. After that he took 4 months off to enjoy family life with Anna and their children. He missed the first few months of Angelica's life due to filming in Morocco. He didn't want it to happen again when his second daughter, Raphaella, was born. After these months he went to Prague to film All Forgotten.

In 1999 he hit the stage again with Speed the Plow. In 2001 The Inspector Lynley Mysteries came around the corner. He plays the main character Thomas Lynley who, together with the help of his side-kick Barbara Havers, tries to solve murder cases.  They started with A Great Deliverance and it was a big hit from the start. The BBC decided to continue and Lynley and Havers are in the top 10 best selling series to foreign countries for the BBC. In the same year (2001) he appeared in a TV drama called Pretend to be Judith.

In 2003 he went to America to play with Eddie Murphy in the Haunted Mansion, based on the ride in the Disneyland parks around the world. He also appeared in a TV series called The Private Life of Samuel Pepys. In 2005 he played Harold Skimpole in the award-winning BBC drama Bleak House. In October 2006 Nat starred as Albert Speer in a docu-drama about the Nuremberg Trials. In 2007 Nat appeared in Stardust, one of the big blockbusters of the year. In 2008, he had a small part in an episode in Hotel Babylon. He also decided to get back to the theatre stage. After 8 years Nat returned to the stage as St John Quartermaine in Quartermaine Terms. After that Nat worked on Malice in Wonderland in whish he palyes Harry Hunt, a gay gangster and Miss Irena's Children for TV. Miss Irena's children was aired in April 2009. Nat also had a role in the BBC Daytime drama series Land Girls.

In 2010 Nat is going to be a part of the TV Bookclub, broadcasted on More 4, with a repeat on Channel 4. Malice in Wonderland will hit the British cinemas in January 2010 and be out on DVD a few weeks later.

When he is not at work he enjoys family life and gardening. When he was on Broadway, New  York, he went to a phone booth with $70.00 worth of coins just to call Anna. He has 2 hobbies, horses and gambling. He is the owner of a horse called Jellybean and has a quarter-share in the chaser General Wolfe who has done very well in the Grand National. He was refused by a few bookies as he made too much profit with gambling. He has gambled since he was 16. He sneaked out of school once to see the horse races and was bitten by the gambling bug, but in a good way. He makes good money out of it and he always carries his phone and pager with him so he can call his bookies at any time.

Nathaniel is also very active when it comes to charity. He recently visited the war victims in Chad and Darfur. You can read more about this here.  He cares a lot for charity funds such as, JRI films, S.A.F.E. , Barnados and Dec
