The Disasters Emergeny Committee

The Disasters Emergency Committe started in 1963 after a cyclone hit Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). The High commisioner for Ceylon in London appeared on television and asked people to send money for the relief effort. After that the Sub-Committee for Emergencies of the Standing Conference of British Organisation for Aid to Refugees was recognized as an Independant Committee known as the Disasters Emergency Committee.

The first meeting was December 18, 1963 and included representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the British Red Cross society, the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (now Oxfam), Inter-church Aid (now Christian Aid), Save the Children, War on Want, theStanding Conference of British organisations to Refugees (now Refugee Council) and the foreign office.

Nathaniel Parker is not the only British celebrity that supports the DEC as you can see below.
